Hello, welcome to section 1 and in this quick session we're going to walk through the basics of cybersecurity, what it is, what it protects and why your role matters more than you might think. Every time you use something connected to the internet you're using systems that can be easily attacked. Whether it's logging into your work account or checking your bank balance you're sending and receiving information that someone somewhere might try to get without your permission. Cybersecurity is the framework we use to protect that data using firewalls, secure credentials, encryption and user awareness. It's not a single tool but a multi-layered system designed to prevent unauthorised access, detect threats and respond quickly when something goes wrong. You can think of it as the security system for your online life, just like the locks and alarms you might have for your house or flat. When you use a strong password it's like having a really tough front door lock that's hard to pick. You can also add another lock on your door and decide who has access to enter your house and see your private items. Cybersecurity is all about protecting your digital home from unwanted visitors and making sure everything inside stays safe and private just for you. Let us look at a real world example. In 2018 British Airways experienced a data breach where hackers accessed the personal and payment details of up to 500,000 European customers. This event showed how dangerous weak points in a company's systems can be as the hackers took advantage of a known issue in the JavaScript code used on the British Airways website. They were able to insert a piece of malicious code known as MagCart, a malicious code injection technique, onto the payment page. As customers entered their personal and credit card details, the code intercepted and copied the data before it was transmitted securely to VA servers. The malicious code remained on the site, silently collecting data for weeks before the compromise was detected. Just like your home, you wouldn't leave the front door open or hand out spare keys to strangers. Cybersecurity works on the same principle, locking digital doors and limiting access. So why does this matter to you? Because many attacks start with users. Clicking a malicious link, reusing passwords or installing unauthorized apps are common entry points. Awareness isn't optional. It's part of the defense system.
